Emperor Guillotine – Robot Monster

Emperor Guillotine – Robot Monster
Self released – 2018
Doom, Stoner, Heavy Rock
Rated: ****

Emperor Guillotine is the brainchild of Dallas, Texas native Ben Randolph. Studying music for most of his life, he writes and records out of his home studio. Spending his teen years and early twenties going through a succession of bands that were disorganized, lacking focus, not very good or (usually) a combination of all of those traits, he decided to strike out on his own and do what he wanted. Influenced by classic heavy metal such as Black Sabbath, Ben created the Emperor Guillotine project to create music that reflects the purity, darkness and heaviness of the albums such as Master of Reality, Vol 4 and Sabotage. More modern influences include The Sword, Earth, Elder and Orchid. Unless otherwise noted, Ben does all writing, recording, programming, mixing and mastering for Emperor Guillotine. This mainly instrumental album, Robot Monster, plays like a soundtrack to an imaginary early 60’s film about the dangers of drug use and how the ‘kids’ were going feral from too much of the good stuff! Down-tuned stoner riffs rub shoulders with doomy compositions that are helped in no end by excellent use of vocal samples, slowed down and distorted into slurring narratives. Heavily fuzzed passages are relentlessly played over riffs that are made to get your head nodding. Screaming solos come in with a real ‘70’s style vibe that suits perfectly. Emperor Guillotine have produced a collection of tracks that should please anyone who worships the riff. And because they are good guys, it is name your price on Bandcamp.

Doom Charts

“What is real? Because unceasingly we are bombarded with pseudo-realities manufactured by very sophisticated people using very sophisticated electronic mechanisms. I do not distrust their motives; I distrust their power. They have a lot of it. And it is an astonishing power: that of creating whole universes, universes of the mind. I ought to know. I do the same thing.” (Philip K. Dick)

Weedpecker – III

Weedpecker – III
Stickman Records - 2018
Stoner, Psychedelic Rock, Heavy Rock
Rated: ****

The Polish trippin’ stoners start off 2018 with an impressive release. On III, the four-piece group from Warsaw conjure dreamy psychedelic soundscapes and melodic fuzzed out riffs into a blissful, swirling haze.  And for once, the over used term “psychedelic” really applies here. This is a trip into a sonic landscape that made me forget the outside world and found me immersed on the journey that Weedpecker were taking me. Heavy when it needs to be, the riffs are natural and unforced and with great song compositions, the different tones and colours used really gel into a stunning album. Not since “A Storm In Heaven” by The Verve have I been transported to a place where I can escape to for 45 mins...

Kayleth – Colossus

Kayleth – Colossus
Argonauta Records - 2018
Stoner, Space, Rock
Rated: ****

Italian space rockers Kayleth have an almighty epic record on their hands. Like the bastard son of Orange Goblin and Monster Magnet, this album sets out for outer space with heavy riffs, plenty of fuzz and enough attitude to destroy anything that stands in their way. Understated synth playing gives a sparkle and sheen to the song compositions without becoming just annoying “spacey sounds”. Yep, of course the lyrics are sci-fi themed but at the heart of things, Kayleth play heavy rock like it should be played – you know the score by now ….. big sound, massive production, meaty riffs and it fills me with the urge to stomp my feet and nod my head like a metronome running on bad drugs. Blast off with “Colossus”!

Avon – Mad Marco

Avon – Mad Marco
Ozium Records – 2017
Rock, Stoner
Rated: ****

We've seen the different Kyuss members surface here, there or everywhere. But Alfredo Hernández was probably one of the more elusive ones. He did wild stints and wonderful things with loads of different projects. But nothing could really be called as his very own outlet; which might be a drummers curse. Brave Black Sea almost filled that spot; but was shortlived. Or was it? But immediately after came Avon. Featuring James Childs (Airbus, Lakota) and Charles Pasarell (Waxy, Lakota) with whom he already played on a couple of Vic Du Monte records. Is it an Alfredo project or a true three-piece if ever there was one. Well, they will soon release their new record Dave's Dungeon through Heavy Psych Sounds. So, the band is definitely on a roll! And their 2016 released record Mad Marco was a definite bullseye shot. And guess what, the righteous Ozium Records label took it upon themselves to spread the word even wider. A limited edition re-release with one extra track for those who missed out the first time around. A blue instead of a red cover; but with every dusty desert track still proudly rocking its majestic heritage. Seminal stoner that borders on the atavistic, but with enough psychedelic touches and pop sensible hooks to make you bop and nod. The groove runs deep and riffs flow like a cool breeze through the hot air. They are the best of the best and that is clearly audible on all the twelve tracks. The ending bonus track called Voidtronix is dreamy, atmospheric and has you on edge for the duration; waiting for a release. Waiting...  But it is Mad Marco! And Mad Marco does whatever the hell he wants!

Zom – Nebulos

Zom – Nebulos
Argonauta Records - 2018
Heavy Rock Stoner
Rated: ****

I like fuzz. I like it on my breakfast, I like it in my drinks. Hell, I like fuzz in my pants and in my head. Do I love fuzz more than my family? Hard to say. But fuzz has never made me get up at 3.00am because it heard a sound downstairs or announced on Sunday evening that a school project needs to be finished - you decide. Needless to say, Zom like a lot of fuzz. Fusing all that is great about dirty stoner rock’n’roll, they sound like the satan-spawned bastard offspring between Stoner, Hard Rock and attitude - which is to say fucking brilliant. This is punk blues powered by high octane riffs that are cranked out with scant disregard for niceties, urged on by a cleanish vocal style that has a passionate and urgent rasp to it. Precision, scalpel sharp solos are strewn over the songs in all the right places, giving you a collection of tunes that demand to be played again and again. And for a bonus in this day and age of heavier than thou, someone has remembered to write tracks with decent hook-lines that make the whole Nebulos album scream by in a satisfying blur of foot-stomping thuggery.

The W Likes – The W Likes

The W Likes – The W Likes
Self Released - 2017
Rock, Stoner, Desert Blues
Rated: *****

Up here on the top floor of Maim Towers, I look out over you, the little people and decide which words of wisdom to type, in the hope that my music choices can bring some hope into the lives you lead. I do get a lot of shit send that I have to sift through and within quite a short while, I can tell if I like it enough to review. But Stoner music is quite hard to rate. Just the very basic set up, the sound, the tunes etc mean that even an average band will have moments of toe tapping and head nodding. So when an album like The W Likes drops on my earphones, all of a sudden, the dross is blown away and the sheer excellence of this offering is plain to see. I will not give you a track by track review - I will get straight to the question you need to know: Is it any good? YEAH, IT’S FUCKING GREAT. Groove-ridden monster riffs, screaming solos, heavy backing, punk mixed with classic rock, stoner desert blues - this is the good shit. My heart has been lifted and my soul cleansed - much jumping up and down with added nodding power.

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 artists listened to last week...

After a month of only posts about the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown and all sorts of amazing albums from 2017 we are already one week into the new year. And of course we've been checking out some amazing new stuff. So, before we get cracking on all the new 2018 albums already out and soon to be released. We shall try to focus most of the remaining January months on the back catalogue that all deserves attention. And as we aim to do so, we listened some damn fine stuff.  What about the new cats from Eindhoven, that picked up the torch that Peter Pan Speedrock dropped when they quit. It's White Boy Wasted with their debut record The Dirty South Special out on Lighttown Fidelity. Speedrock, punk, hardcore and metal all mixed into a fastball of pure but filthy rock! Gypsy Sun Revival. Psychedelic rock that is both bluesy and spacey and will make you dream of the good times! Nasoni Records doing good stuff again! Mother Mars will captivate you with their interplanetary trip through the bluesy wastelands. On Lunar Highlands released through Pepper Shaker Records is big on fuzz, groove and Sabbathian doom. The re-release of Avon's Mad Marco album by Ozium Records will soon be mentioned, but for everyone who missed out the first time it was released, get it now. It's wild, wonderful and has an bonus track! And there is Stoned Therapists, who sound like they are continuing Queens Of The Stone Age songs we all know in a different way. Their self-released, self-titled album comes across as a different take on the Palm Desert, Rancho De La Luna songs. And we thank Frazer Jones and his magical Desert Psychlist for pointing us into their direction! So, onwards and upwards in 2018 and with already five damn fine record notches on our belt! Check'm out! Check'm all out!

The Doom Charts for December 2017

Doom Chart

JK’s Personal Top 20

JK’s Personal Top 20

We do the Doom Charts. We love it. It is another way to get more attention for all those amazing albums released every month. But there are so many more albums that deserve attention. That is why I implore all of you to check out the other blogs, listed at the bottom of the Doom Charts. All of the contributors do majestic work on the respective sites. And over here, the HiVe, we do what we can. But we must confess, it's hard to keep up. With all the great music and all the annoying stuff that also demands attention. So, now and again, when another project comes up, we shall be on pause again. Unfortunately. But that is the nature of this game.
