Grass – Demo

Grass – Demo
Self released – 2012
Rock, Seventies, Stoner, Doom
Rated: ****

My love for proto stoner or all that heaviness that came from the sixties and seventies has always been everywhere on my sleeve like a vial of spilled acid. So when the first notes from the four-track demo of the Spanish (soon to be Catalan)outfit Grass graced my ears, my heart took a jump and my mind started racing. With an ever-present retro feel the five-some takes all that goodness from that early era and makes it ten tons heavier. Imagine Led Zeppelin incorporating influences from Down or Blue Cheer taking notes from Kyuss. It has that swinging groove from the old days and those languid rhythms from later great efforts like Sleep, Saint Vitus and Pentagram. But they also know how to speed up and move like a rolling avalanche; which is why the demo keeps getting better and better over time. Raw rock with tasty riffs, amazing basswork and monstrous drums. The vocalist convinces most of the time and on those moments he almost seems to falter he gets backup from his amigos and the accent shifts and satisfies once again. I’ve not heard seventies rock, infused with stoner, psychedelica and a heavy dose of doom executed this well for ages. It’s all happening man. It’s all happening!
